PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Outside

The Museum is to be made of wood, with the shape of a hangar like the one in Ny Ålesund in 1926, about 40 meters long, 30 meters wide and app 10 meters high. The hangar will be smaller than the original, adjusted to the size of the museum.

Inside

Inside there will be one big, open room, with a gallery along the whole building making a 1st floor.
Along the sidewalls in both floors, smaller walls will divide the space into many smaller open rooms where historical events/episodes will be exhibited.

A route

The visitors can follow “a route” where events from 1907/1909, 1926 and 1928, in a detailed way and with simple words, will be presented. All in a chronological and historical perspective.
The visitors will leave the museum with a clear overview of what happened in Svalbard in 1907/1909, 1926 and 1928, as well as the necessary knowledge to understand how important these expeditions have been in Svalbard and the history of man in the Polar Regions.

“The route” shall consist of information from international sources, seen in a modern perspective.
Reproductions/copies of old posters, original newspapers, maps, pictures, models, landscape models, copies of objects (and hopefully originals) shall reflect and illustrate the content of the texts.
Old recordings of airships and the rescue operation itself shall be shown in the movie theatre.

The central part

In the central part of the Museum there will be a gondola, size 1:1 and other models and artefacts. The gondola can also be accessed from the gallery/first floor. From the gallery/first floor it will be open around the gondola, and it will be possible to se parts of the ground floor (as seen at the “Fram Museet” in Oslo).

The inner part

The inner part of the building, the opposite side of the entrance area, there shall be a movie theatre (74 seats) in the full height of the building, entrance/exit in both floors. The movie theatre shall bed used for showing film related to the airships and special arrangements.

On the ground floor there will be toilets and a playing area for children.

Technology

We will make use of modern technology like the internet, touch screens and databases for objects localized other places in the world. These are familiar tools for several generations. Especially in relation to possible collaborations with educational institutions, these tools can promote interactive learning.
