The Spitsbergen Airship Museum is the product of an interest in polar history and a desire to create a meaningful way of life in the Arctic.
The museum is a private museum, owned by one Italian and one Norwegian.
The idea of starting a museum was born in 2005. The early work consisted of getting in contact with people with the same interest as us. At the same time the work with finding information started.
Since 2005 we have visited libraries, relatives of expedition participants, archives, museums, participated in seminars, searched for information, found related items of different sort; documents, pictures, postcards, drawings of the airships, philately, books, articles, film and more.
Today the museum has a considerate archive of different information related to the exhibition.
As well as the permanent exhibition there will be arranged separate temporary exhibitions. In 2009, from about June through December, there will be a 100 years anniversary exhibition about the Wellman 1909 expedition.
